This set of four ‘Corall’ chairs, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1937, reflects the practicality and simplicity characteristic of Swedish design during this period. Created for summer houses and cabins, the Corall series was designed to suit homes often located in natural or coastal environments. The name "Corall" likely references these settings, as Hjorth sought to create furniture that blended seamlessly with its surroundings. The use of birch and rattan highlights the focus on durability and natural materials.
By 1937, Hjorth was nearing the end of his tenure at Nordiska Kompaniet, leaving the following year. During this time, his work began to prioritise accessibility and functionality, moving away from the Art Deco influences seen earlier in his career. The Corall series represents this shift toward a more restrained style, aligning with the principles of Swedish Modernism.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish furniture designer known for blending modernist and traditional influences. From 1927 to 1938, he served as the chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), where he created both luxurious Art Deco-inspired pieces and more rustic designs like his cabin furniture collections. Hjorth's career bridged high-end exclusivity and practical, nature-inspired design, leaving a lasting impact on Scandinavian furniture.
