Armchair ‘Egg chair’ designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen
Denmark, 1958
Leather and steel. The ‘Egg’ chair was originally designed in 1958 for the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, a groundbreaking project where Arne Jacobsen served as both architect and interior designer. The chair was part of Jacobsen’s holistic approach to design, where every element—from the building’s structure to its furnishings—was meticulously coordinated.
The ‘Egg’ chair’s pioneering design challenged traditional furniture-making techniques of the time. It was one of the first chairs to use a moulded inner shell, made from foam-covered polyurethane, providing the flexibility needed to achieve its complex curves. This innovation revolutionised furniture design, making it possible to create ergonomic and sculptural forms that also offered outstanding comfort.
The chair’s cocoon-like design wraps around the sitter, providing both comfort and privacy. Unlike later models with separate seat cushions, this early model features a fully integrated seat, highlighting Jacobsen’s dedication to a simple form and clean lines. The chair retains its original black leather upholstery which has acquired a magnificent patina over years, enhancing both character and authenticity.
