Carpet ‘The Meadows’ designed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström, for MMF AB
Sweden, 1940s
Wool. In 1928, Märta Måås Fjetterström was commissioned to create textiles for the interiors of the Swedish American Line’s M/S Kungsholmen, a “floating showcase of Swedish classicism”, solidifying her role as a key figure in Swedish design history. The ‘Meadows’ rug was one of her creations for this commission. Its intricate pattern features patchwork of geometric fields in soft greens, earthy browns and warm yellows, interspersed with delicate floral motifs mimicking blossoming meadows. The colour palaette captures the shifting hues of the Nordic seasons and a detailed border frames the design.
The ’Meadows’ rug was crafted using the knotted pile technique, a labour-intensive method where each knot is meticulously tied by hand. This technique creates a plush, textured surface with a luxurious feel underfoot.
