Ceiling lamp, model A203, designed by Alvar Aalto for Valaistustyö
Finland, 1940s
Lacquered metal and brass. The ceiling lamp, model A203, designed by Alvar Aalto for Valaistustyö in the 1940s, showcases Aalto’s unique ability to combine sophisticated aesthetics with practical functionality. Crafted from lacquered metal and brass, this rare example holds notable historical importance, as it was originally produced for the iconic Stora Enso headquarters in Helsinki in 1962.
Featuring soft oval and cylindrical shapes, the lamp introduces a sense of balance and warmth to any interior. These organic forms were carefully designed to complement and contrast the strict geometric architecture of the Stora Enso building. Aalto’s choice of premium materials, such as brass, enhances the piece's durability and adds a touch of understated luxury to its clean design.
Located in Helsinki’s Southern Harbour, the Stora Enso headquarters reflects Aalto’s comprehensive design approach, with materials like marble, granite, copper, and brass woven into the building’s aesthetic. The A203 lamp embodies this same philosophy, seamlessly integrating into its surroundings while remaining a timeless design statement.
