Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, usually referred to as GAN, was a Swedish artist and writer. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Swedish modernist art movement. His style was fluid with changing trends and contained elements of Cubism, futurism, Expressionism, Surrealism, avant-garde, progressivism, romanticism, and abstract. His works primarily featured very masculine men, particularly sailors, labourers, and athletes, and elements of industry, such as factories, machines, and cars. Despite being spurned by the Swedish press, Adrian-Nilsson was well-respected in avant-garde circles.
