Floor lamp model 9621 designed by Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy
Finland, 1940s

Brass, slatted wood shade, leather.

Paavo Tynell’s floor lamp model 9621 is a refined example of the designer’s ability to fuse modernism with natural textures. Standing tall with a slender brass stem, the lamp’s smooth, cylindrical base ensures stability while maintaining a minimal footprint. The warm golden brass finish brings a subtle reflective quality, giving the lamp a radiant glow even when not in use.

The lamp’s defining feature is its slatted wooden shade, a striking element that instantly draws the eye. Composed of vertical wooden slats arranged with expert craftsmanship, the shade gently diffuses light, creating an ambient, cozy atmosphere. The wood’s natural grain introduces a sense of warmth and texture that contrasts beautifully with the polished brass structure. The 1940s depression impacted production in several ways. Materials like wood, straw, and grain stalk began to be used for lampshades because quality fabric was unavailable.

Stamped '9621'.

Paavo Tynell (1890 – 1973) is one of the most important 20th-century lighting designers. He was a trained sheet metal worker – a unique background that influenced his recognisable aesthetic. The company Taito Oy was founded by Tynell himself because other manufacturers considered his creations too complex for production.
