Folding stool ‘Guldhøj’ designed by Poul Hundevad
Denmark, 1960s
Rosewood and leather. This stool’s design was inspired by a fascinating piece of Danish history. In 1891, a team of archaeologists led by Vilhelm Boye excavated the Guldhøj burial mound in southern Jutland; a burial site dating back to around 1400 BCE. The dig unearthed a rare glimpse into the ancient craftsmanship practices of the Nordic Bronze Age as well as an incredibly rare and well-preserved stool. The unearthed stool was simple yet elegantly crafted as well as compact and lightweight.
When Poul Hundevad designed his ‘Guldhøj’ folding stool in the 1960s, he drew direct inspiration from the original Bronze Age design. Hundevad modernised the stool, using rosewood and leather, materials prized for their beauty and durability, while maintaining the spirit of simplicity and functionality inherent in the ancient piece. The rosewood frame of Hundevad’s stool exhibits an exceptional depth of colour and stirking grain while the leather seat is carefully hand-stitched. In designing the ‘Guldhøj’ stool, Hundevad paid homage to Denmark's cultural heritage and demonstrated how timeless design principles could bridge millennia.
