Library table designed by Börge Mogensen for Erhard Rasmussen
Denamark, 1954
Tabletop in teak, legs made of pear wood.Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a key figure in the development of Danish modern design, focusing on designs that would endure over time rather than follow fleeting trends. Mogensen was particularly influenced by Shaker furniture, a style of furniture developed by the Shaker religious community in the United States. The Shakers often used multiple sets of legs on larger tables to ensure durability and balance.
Mogensen began study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1942, where he was a student of the renowned architect and designer Kaare Klint. Klint's philosophy of functionalism deeply influenced Mogensen’s approach to design.
The ‘Library Table’ was originally a collaboration between Mogensen and Erhard Rasmussen, a Danish master cabinetmaker whose workshop touted craftsmanship over mass production. Examples manufactured by Rasmussen are not widely produced and while Mogensen designed other versions of the ‘Library Table’, the eight-legged version is extraordinarily rare.
