The Profilvasen is characterised by its repetitive, embossed profiles—stylised human faces or silhouettes—that wrap around the body of the vase. This motif creates a dynamic, sculptural quality, emphasising both texture and symmetry. The design reflects Petrus’s interest in classical antiquity, combined with a modernist sensibility that was emerging in Swedish decorative arts at the time.
Anna Petrus (1886–1949) was one of the few prominent female designers in Sweden’s early modernist movement. Her partnership with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn allowed her to explore decorative metalwork, producing a range of objects including vases, candlesticks, and trays. Her work stood out for its bold, graphic style, often incorporating influences from ancient cultures, as well as Art Deco and modernist aesthetics.
Petrus began working with Svenskt Tenn shortly after its founding in 1924 by Estrid Ericson. Petrus’s designs aligned perfectly with Ericson’s vision of combining artistic creativity with functional design, helping to establish Svenskt Tenn’s reputation for innovative craftsmanship. Petrus’s designs for Svenskt Tenn gained international recognition at the 1925 Paris Exhibition.
Today, her work is considered a cornerstone of early Swedish modernism, with designs like the Profilvasen still celebrated for their timeless aesthetic and innovative approach.
