Modernity exhibits at the PAD fair, 8 – 13 October 2024
Modernity exhibits Nordic design by the most significant names of the twentieth century such as Kaare Klint, Finn Juhl, Josef Frank, Helge Vestergaard Jensen, Otto Schulz, Carl Malmsten, Alvar Aalto, Stig Lönnberg and Barbro Nilsson, to name a few.
One of the highlights of Modernity's stand this year is a pair of rare wingback chairs designed and manufactured by Frits Henningsen. This pair, likely one of only around fifty known to have been produced, retains its original leather, offering a unique opportunity to own an exceptional object that has become an icon of Danish design.
Internationally recognized as a prominent figure in the history of Scandinavian design during the 20th century, Josef Frank is showcased with a one-of-a-kind sideboard. This piece was designed for an apartment on Strandvägen, in central Stockholm. It was made by Svenskt Tenn in 1960-61. The overall design, especially that of the legs, was inspired by the chest of drawers, model 2170, designed by Josef Frank in 1954. The figuring of the walnut across the front and top of the piece is spectacular.
Important lighting pieces by Poul Henningsen and Paavo Tynell are throughout. Modernity are delighted to again be showing the iconic floor lamp 'Question Mark' designed by Poul Henningsen. This model is significant due to its early yellow painted shades and 'patented' stamp.
Additionally we have brought three rugs created by Barbro Nilsson for MMF in Sweden, including the exquisite ‘Strålblomma’ rug, designed by Barbro Nilsson in 1958. The rug’s striking geometric pattern, rendered in rich shades of blue with subtle accents of beige, is both timeless and contemporary, a hallmark of Nilsson’s approach to weaving.
These pieces are currently appearing alongside the work of contemporary acclaimed ceramicist Sandra Davolio.
