Rare wingback chair designed and manufactured by Frits Henningsen
Denmark, 1935

Oak legs. Upholstered with original patinated natural leather.

The wingback chair reflects Frits Henningsen’s deep understanding of traditional European furniture styles, particularly the wingback form, which has origins in 17th-century England and was designed to shield the sitter from draughts and create a cosy, private space. It is most likely Henningsen was inspired by furniture he saw during his trips to England in the early 20th Century.

Frits Henningsen's wingback chairs are considered rare, with estimates suggesting that approximately fifty were produced. This limited production reflects Henningsen's dedication to meticulous craftsmanship and quality, as he personally oversaw the creation of each piece in his Copenhagen workshop. Even fewer retain their original natural leather.

Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was a renowned Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer celebrated for his mastery of craftsmanship and timeless designs. Known for his commitment to quality, Henningsen crafted furniture in his own workshop, established in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1919. He completed his apprenticeship with one of the most respected cabinetmakers of the time, I.P. Mørck, before establishing his own studio.

This chair was manufactured in the 1950s.
