Rug, anonymous
Sweden, 1930

Wool.

Although a designer has not yet been attributed to this textile, its grand scale makes it a commanding presence in any room. The design features a warm terracotta base, interspersed with repeated geometric motifs framed in vibrant contrasts of mustard yellow, navy blue, and soft beige. A rich border pattern frames the central field, combining checkerboard elements with horizontal lines. The symmetrical arrangement and precise patterning make it not only visually stunning but also a testament to the weaver’s skill.

This rug was woven using the Rölakan (flatweave) technique, a hallmark of Swedish textiles. The Rölakan method, characterised by its interwoven warp and weft threads, creates a lightweight yet highly durable rug. This technique also allows for sharp, defined patterns and vibrant colour blocking, which are evident in the crisp, geometric shapes seen here.

While the designer remains anonymous, the quality of the weaving and design suggests it was created in a professional workshop by highly skilled artisans. Rugs like this were often commissioned for Swedish manor homes or public institutions, reflecting the status and taste of their owners. The exceptional size of this piece further supports the idea that it was intended for a significant space, making it a true statement piece.
