Rug designed by Karl Dangel
Sweden, 1950s
Handwoven wool carpet in Rölakan technique. This playful textile features a dynamic interplay of geometric motifs in a vibrant palette of blue, pink, white, and earthy tones. The repeating patterns and orderly composition has been meticulously woven using the Rölakan, or ‘flatweave’ technique; a traditional Swedish weaving method renowned for its durability and intricate patterns. In Rölakan, the weft threads completely cover the warp, creating a smooth, flat surface. At each colour change, the wefts are interlocked, forming distinct ridges unique to this technique. The rug is signed "CD," reflecting Dangel’s thoughtful adaptation of his signature for easier weaving, as the "C" was simpler to craft in this medium than a "K."
Karl Dangel’s designs are celebrated for their modern interpretations of traditional Swedish weaving techniques. In the post-war period, there was a renewed appreciation for handcrafts, as they represented a connection to heritage while embracing modernist aesthetics. Rugs like this one were not just practical floor coverings but integral elements of Nordic interior design, where textiles were used to create warmth and visual interest.
Signed CD. Dangel signed his rugs CD— because the C was easier to weave than the K.
