Rug ‘Girls in the Window’ designed by Edna Martin for Svensk Hemslöjd
Sweden, 1956

Wool.

Designed by Edna Martin in 1956, the ‘Girl in the Window’ rug features a series of rectangular ‘window’ motifs, each framing stylised figures that symbolise a girl. A colour palette of soft blues, muted earth tones and pastel highlights creates a calming yet playful impression which is highlighted by the structured symmetry and playful geometry of the textile.

The rug was produced using the Rölakan (flatweave) technique where the interlocking of warp and weft threads creates a durable, double-sided textile with sharply defined patterns. This weaving method enhances the visual clarity of the piece but also ensures its resilience.

Edna Martin (1921-2003) was one of Sweden’s most prolific textile designers. After graduating from Konstfack, Sweden’s top university for arts, crafts and design, she continued her education in France and England. Edna Martin later went on to head Svensk Hemslöjd as artistic director, where she created a plethora of iconic designs such as the ‘Girl in the Window’ rug.
