Serving trolley model 889 designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Sweden
1940s

Brass & glass.

The trolley, model 889, by Josef Frank is a prime example of design from the Swedish Grace movement. The design of the trolley references neoclassicism, drawing inspiration from objects found in Ancient Greece and Rome. The brass edge on this piece, featuring perforated decorative holes and scalloped detailing, would likely be made using a combination of stamping, perforating, and forming techniques.

Josef Frank's works are held in several prestigious museum collections, including that of the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, the Wien Museum, the MOMA and Cooper Hewitt in New York, and the V&A in London.

The piece was made and sold by Svenskt Tenn, an iconic Swedish design company, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson. In 1934, Ericson partnered with Josef Frank, an Austrian-born architect and designer who had fled rising political tensions in Europe. Their partnership lasted 33 years.
