Set of eight ‘Heart’ chairs model FH 4103 designed by Hans J. Wegner for Fritz Hansen
Denmark, 1952

Oak and leather.

Hans Wegner’s ‘Heart’ chair is instantly recognisable by its compact, triangular seat, which subtly resemble a heart. The oak frames have been meticulously shaped, sanded and finished by hand to highlight the natural grain of the wood while the natural leather seats add a layer of comfort and sophistication. Fritz Hansen manufactured Wegner’s designs using precision joinery and expert woodworking.

The chair was designed with a deep understanding of human anatomy. The traditional woodworking technique of steam bending would have been employed to achieve the curve to the backrest. This involves heating the oak with steam to make it pliable, allowing it to be shaped into a smooth curve that follows the natural contours of the human body. Steam bending was often used in Danish modern furniture because it preserved the strength and grain of the wood while creating elegant, flowing forms. Once bent into shape, the wood is clamped in a mould until it cools and retains its new form. Once steam bent, the backrest would have been carved precisely by hand to achieve a smooth, even curve, allowing for a higher degree of control over the thickness and curvature of the wood.

Often referred to as the “Master of the Chair’, Wegner played a pivotal role in the development of Danish modernism which sought to emphasise craftsmanship and functionality over superfluous ornamentation. The compact size of the ‘Heart’ chair and its clean lines reflect the growing focus on producing furniture suited to smaller, modern living spaces. The chair was originally designed to pair with Wegner’s model FH4104 ‘Heart’ table, and the triangular seat shape allowed them to tuck neatly under the table, maximising space effectively.
