Table lamp model 9621 designed by Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy
Finland, 1940s

Brass, slatted wood shade, leather.

The table lamp model 9621 by Paavo Tynell captures the same minimalist elegance as its floor lamp counterpart but in a more compact and intimate form. The lamp sits atop a round brass base, which provides a sturdy foundation and complements the slender brass stem that rises effortlessly from it. The sleek brass surface is highly polished, catching the light and providing a soft, luminous quality that elevates the entire piece. The brass stem is partially wrapped in leather, introducing an element of warmth and craftsmanship to balance the cool, industrial feel of the metal.

The table model features a slatted wooden shade, meticulously crafted from thin, vertical strips of wood. These slats allow light to filter through, casting intricate shadows while providing a diffused, warm glow. The natural texture of the wood contrasts beautifully with the polished brass, embodying Tynell’s genius in combining modern materials with organic elements.

Paavo Tynell (1890 – 1973) is one of the most important 20th-century lighting designers. He was a trained sheet metal worker – a unique background that influenced his recognisable aesthetic. The company Taito Oy was founded by Tynell himself because other manufacturers considered his creations too complex for production.
