Vanity desk ‘Margareta’ design by Axel Einar Hjorth, Nordiska Kompaniet
Sweden, 1930s

Lacquered, glass and textile. Stool with original fabric.
Labeled.

The ‘Margareta’ vanity desk, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1930s, exemplifies Swedish functionalism with subtle Art Deco influences. Hjorth, a leading designer of the era, was known for merging modernist principles with refined craftsmanship, creating furniture that was both elegant and practical.

The name ‘Margareta’ may have been inspired by an influential woman in Hjorth’s professional or personal circles, possibly a client or patron. Many of his designs were bespoke or high-end commissions for Nordiska Kompaniet’s elite clientele, and naming them after real individuals could have added a further layer of personalisation.
