Vase designed by Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg, Sweden
1968
Stoneware.Signed.
Berndt Friberg was one of Sweden’s most accomplished ceramicists, known for his exceptional glazes and precise forms. This vase, with its exaggerated, flattened spherical shape, exemplifies his mastery of proportion and balance. The richly textured rabbit’s fur glaze, a hallmark of his work, was achieved through a meticulous mouth-spraying technique, layering pigments to create depth and subtle tonal variations.
A perfectionist, Friberg ensured each piece was flawless, carefully maintaining the unglazed brown foot ring that became his signature. His nearly 50-year career at Gustavsberg began in 1934 as a thrower for Wilhelm Kåge. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he personally shaped and glazed every piece, demonstrating an unparalleled dedication to craftsmanship that solidified his reputation as a master of Swedish ceramics.
