Vase ‘Fiskgraal’ designed by Edward Hald for Orrefors
Sweden, 1959
Glass. Signed.
Edward Hald (1883–1980) was a Swedish artist and designer known for his work with glass at Orrefors. One of his most recognised contributions is the Fiskgraal (Fish Graal) series, which demonstrates his skill in the Graal technique. This process involves layering and engraving glass to create detailed compositions. The fish and plant motifs have a sense of depth, achieved through multiple layers of glass. As each piece is individually blown and shaped, no two Fiskgraal vases or bowls are exactly alike.
The Fiskgraal series reflects Swedish glass craftsmanship and remains of interest to collectors. It was an advancement in glass design, combining technical precision with artistic expression.
Hald contributed to the development of Swedish Modern glass and helped bring international recognition to Orrefors. Born in Stockholm, he initially studied painting and ceramics before training under artists such as Henri Matisse in Paris. His transition into glass design led to a career in which he often depicted nature—fish, plants, and abstract patterns—within glass.H: 18 cm / 7 1/16"
