Vase, model SYA, designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane, Rörstrand
Sweden, 1960s
Stoneware. This model is characterized by its elegant, elongated form and distinctive "hare's fur" glaze—a reddish-brown finish that darkens near the base. The SYA vases are part of Stålhane's "Alphabet" series, where each model was assigned a unique combination of letters, such as SYA, SYB, and SYE. The SYA model, with its refined silhouette and rich glaze, exemplifies Stålhane's contribution to mid-century Scandinavian design.
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920–1990) was one of Sweden’s most significant ceramicists, shaping the artistic direction of Rörstrand from the 1940s through the 1970s. He began his career as a decorator before becoming the company’s artistic director, developing a signature style that balanced modernist simplicity with an appreciation for traditional craftsmanship.
Before becoming one of Sweden’s most renowned ceramicists, he actually started out as a decorator at Rörstrand in the 1930s, hand-painting designs onto pottery. His artistic career took a major turn when he studied sculpture at Konstfack and later became Rörstrand’s leading designer, creating elegant stoneware pieces that are now highly collectible.
